24 ‘When my yoga teacher in London suggested I join her and some of her Indian friends on an Ayurvedic retreat in Kerala, South India, I wasn’t going to say no’

I’d become pretty serious about yoga. I’d tried different types with different teachers in retreats ranging from Turkey to Italy, France, Spain, Greece and even the Isle of Wight. The women I joined on these retreats were studious and diligent, intent on improving their teaching methods, as well as their personal practice. The all-girl weekend yoga retreats that I joined took place in the tiny village of Nettlebed and were, in fact, full-on formal yoga training weekends for diploma students. The ten-hour days of yoga were more than a little advanced for me. They were strenuous and challenging, but I jogged along with it all and managed fine.

I learned a lot. I enjoyed the music, camaraderie, simple food and lodgings. It was healthy, not just physically (the diet was always home-made, simple, vegetarian) but mentally too. We would spend hours in the evenings after dinner talking and exploring alternative therapies and spiritual beliefs from different cultures. Animal cards and angel cards would come out, along with dousing paraphernalia. One of the yoga students was a trained astrologer who would later do my chart. These get-togethers really piqued my interest in other therapies.
